Difference Between ATD and CDCP Certification: Which One Should You Take?

If you work in data centers, you have probably seen both ATD and CDCP on job descriptions and training lists. They sound similar, but they are not the same kind of certification. One teaches you a broad foundation. The other makes you a specialist in one specific standard.

What is CDCP?

CDCP stands for Certified Data Centre Professional. It is an entry-level, foundation certification that covers how a data center works as a whole. Typical topics include:

  • Site selection and building layout
  • Power distribution, UPS, and generators
  • Cooling and airflow
  • Cabling and racks
  • Fire detection and suppression
  • Physical security
  • Operations and maintenance basics

It is designed for people who need to understand the full picture: technicians, network engineers, facility staff, and anyone newly moving into a data center role.

What is ATD?

ATD stands for Accredited Tier Designer. It is issued by the Uptime Institute and is focused on one thing: the Tier Standard: Topology. You learn how Tier I to Tier IV are defined, what concurrent maintainability and fault tolerance mean in practice, and how to design power and cooling systems that meet a target Tier level.

It is designed for people who design or review data center infrastructure: design engineers, consultants, and project managers working on new builds or upgrades.

Side by side

CDCP & ATD Full name Certified Data Centre Professional & Accredited Tier Designer Level Foundation / entry Advanced / specialist Focus All areas of a data center Tier topology and design Best for Operations staff, technicians, new entrants Designers, consultants, engineers Depth Wide and general Narrow and deep Typical outcome Common language and basic knowledge Ability to design to a Tier level

Key differences

  1. Breadth vs depth. CDCP covers many topics at a basic level. ATD covers one topic, Tier design, at a professional level.
  2. Awareness vs design. CDCP helps you understand and communicate. ATD helps you make and defend design decisions.
  3. Experience expected. CDCP suits people with little or no data center background. ATD is much more useful if you already know power and cooling systems, because the course assumes you can follow technical design discussions.
  4. Industry recognition. Uptime Tier language is widely used in tenders and client requirements, so ATD carries weight in design and consulting work. CDCP is valued as a solid baseline.

An important point about ATD

Being an Accredited Tier Designer does not mean your data center is Tier certified. Tier Certification is a separate process, where Uptime Institute reviews the design documents and later the built facility. ATD gives you the knowledge to design for that process.

How I would choose

  • Just starting out: take CDCP first. It gives you the vocabulary and the full picture.
  • Already working in operations and want to move into design or consulting: CDCP is a good base, then ATD.
  • Already a design or MEP engineer: you can go straight to ATD.
  • Not sure: ask what your target employers or clients actually list in their requirements.
CDCP teaches you how a data center works. ATD teaches you how to design one to a Tier standard.
